Who We Are

Until 1978, the James farm was owned by the descendants of Jesse Woodson James. By then, the elements had just about claimed the farm. It was in ruins. Clay County purchased the home from Jesse's grandchildren and the restoration work was begun. By the next summer, visitors were once again going through the farm. Many visitors expressed an interest in how they could help with the restoration of the farm.

As a direct response to these requests, an organization called "The Friends of the James Farm" was formed and its board of directors would like to invite you to become a member. As a "Friend" your annual membership dues will help finance the continued restoration of the farm as well as help sponsor historical research to help future generations know more about the lives and times of the James family.

By becoming a member you will be part of the history of that very special place and you will be helping preserve it for future generations to enjoy.

Our Mission

The Friends of the James Farm (FOTJF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the legacy of the James Farm Historical Site—the birthplace of Jesse James—owned and operated by Clay County, Missouri.

Our mission is to support, preserve, and share the history of the James Farm and its remarkable place in American folklore. Through public programs, educational events, and community engagement, we help visitors understand the life and times of Jesse James, his family, and his associates.

We also encourage the study and appreciation of the broader historical context that shaped their lives, including:

  • The history of the 1800s in general

  • The Civil War and the Missouri Border War

  • The post-war activities of Jesse and Frank James

The Friends of the James Farm exist to keep this history alive—ensuring that future generations can explore, question, and connect with one of the most colorful and complex periods in American history.

Our Vision for the Future

The Friends of the James Farm Board is committed to strengthening community engagement and expanding membership participation in all programs and events that support and sustain the James Farm Historical Site.

We will continue to provide meaningful contributions—through gifts, improvements, and special events—that enhance the visitor experience and preserve the site’s reputation as a cornerstone of Clay County’s historical and cultural heritage.

We are equally dedicated to inspiring future generations by developing educational programs that foster curiosity, respect, and enthusiasm for the study, preservation, and interpretation of the extraordinary history embodied by the James Farm—the birthplace of Western legend.
